Arbor Day - April 30, 2010

J. Sterling Morton of Nebraska, advocated tree planting for the area's open prairie. He took a position with the State Board of Agriculture where he was able to put his interest in tree planting into action. At a meeting with the board, January 4, 1872, he introduced a resolution that April 10 be set aside for Arbor Day. On April 10, 1872, the first ever Arbor Day was celebrated. It was later changed to April 22 to coincide with Mr. Morton's birthday. In 1970, President Nixon declared the offical National observance as the last Friday in April, where it continues to be most commonly observed.
