Public Works Divisions

Electric Division

The Electric Division is responsible for new construction and repairs of the Village electrical system. This includes maintaining overhead power lines, underground power lines, and substations. This division is also responsible for maintenance of the electric meters and meter reading, and traffic signals.


Gas Division

The Gas Division is responsible for new construction and repairs of the Village gas system. This division only handles gas customers on the former Chanute Air Force Base area. All other gas customers are served through Nicor Gas. Nicor can be reached at 888-642-6748 or by visiting www.nicorgas.com.


Lift / Pump Station & Sanitary Mains

The Lift / Pump Station and Sanitary Main Division is responsible for maintenance and repairs of sanitary mains and all lift stations associated with the Sanitary Division. This division also maintains and repairs storm mains throughout the Village.


Street Division

The Street Division is responsible for a wide variety of tasks involving public streets. This includes the planning and coordination of snow and ice removal, installation of traffic and street name signs, pothole patching, shoulder repair, and street sweeping. Additionally, leaf and brush removal and maintenance of the storm catch basin is performed by the Street Division.

Wastewater Treatment Division

This Wastewater Treatment Division is responsible for the operations of the Wastewater Treatment Plant. This facility treats and processes sanitary materials collected from the system in order to provide a healthy environment through compliance with all of the current state and federal standards.


Water Division

The Water Division is responsible for maintaining water mains, new water taps, and main water valves. Additionally, they repair and replace water meters throughout the Village. Fire hydrants are repaired and maintained by the Water Division, as well.

Water Treatment Division

The Water Treatment Division is responsible for providing safe drinking water for the community. This division manages the operation of the Water Treatment Plant.


Public Utility Organizations

The Village of Rantoul belongs to several public utility organizations including the Illinois Municipal Utilities Association (IMUA), the Illinois Municipal Electric Agency (IMEA), and the Illinois Public Energy Association (IPEA).

The IMUA provides monthly safety meetings for Public Works employees and also represents the Village of Rantoul on Utility, Training, and Legislative Matters. The IMEA secures the pricing of electrical power for the Village. They also represent IMEA members at a higher level of government. Both organizations use the same website.
